Deciding whether to donate to a non-profit organization or directly to an individual family is a personal choice. However, the situation in Gaza has made it increasingly difficult for aid organizations to deliver assistance effectively.
One way to address this issue is by providing financial support directly to the people of Gaza. By gifting money directly to affected families, you empower them to access available resources in a way that best meets their immediate needs. People living in Gaza understand the local context better than anyone else and are in the best position to make informed decisions on how to care for their families—whether it’s securing food, warmth, or other essentials. When you donate directly to a family, you give them the autonomy to make choices that help them stay healthy, safe, and supported in these challenging times.
GoFundMe does not allow individuals in Palestine to create fundraiser accounts. As a result, people in Gaza who need assistance must rely on a sponsor from a country where GoFundMe is accessible.
A sponsor, located outside of Gaza, creates a GoFundMe account on behalf of the individual or family in need. Donors then contribute money to the campaign, which is deposited into the sponsor’s bank account. Once the funds are in the sponsor’s account, the sponsor and the family in Gaza decide how to transfer the money. This can be done through various methods, such as a bank transfer to a Bank of Palestine account (if the family has one), PayPal, Western Union, or even cryptocurrency.
According to Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Norwegian Refugee Committee, CARE International, Save the Children, ActionAid, Christian Aid, War Child, Islamic Relief, HelpAge International, American Friends Service Committee, Oxfam, and other aid organizations, very little aid has gotten into Gaza. Of the little aid that has gotten in, some of the aid has been stolen. War profiteers then sell this food at unreasonably high prices to people in Gaza. All gifts made directly to individuals and families in Gaza give people in Gaza the ability to combat these high prices and purchase food until more aid is allowed in.
First and foremost, it's important to know that any gift, no matter the amount, makes a difference. However, there are other ways you can help beyond giving money. Every campaign relies on its donors to reach its goal, and raising awareness can significantly increase the chances of receiving more donations.
One way to contribute is by raising awareness for a specific campaign. Financial gifts tend to grow when a community connects with the story of a specific person or family. There are many ways to help spread the word, including personally reaching out to friends and family to share the story, posting on social media, organizing events like a bake sale, or any other creative ideas you might have! Additionally, you can contact the sponsor listed on the GoFundMe page to ask if there are other ways you can assist in promoting the cause. We would also love if you spread awareness about Help Fund Gaza!
No matter how you choose to contribute, we deeply appreciate how you are choosing to help!
When there is this much need, it can feel overwhelming to choose a campaign. The most important thing to know is that any gift helps. You can choose a single campaign to gift to, or you can split a gift across multiple campaigns. Do what you can to not get overwhelmed by the situation when trying to help; nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something.
When choosing a specific campaign, we have a couple of tools to choose from. You can browse all campaigns and select one (or many!), or you can use our matching tool to randomly select a campaign.
We understand that when it comes to donating, you want to be sure your contribution is going to the right place. Especially with the situation in Gaza becoming more catastrophic every day, the appeals are growing in numbers and it’s normal to seek reassurance before donating. To provide peace of mind, we have partnered with the Gaza Horizon Project, which vetted and verified 50 campaigns featured on our platform. These campaigns were fully vetted for legitimacy to their best ability.
That said, we also feature other families who, while not formally vetted, are believed to be legitimate based on our various review processes. Additionally, we are currently strengthening our verification process in preparation for more campaigns; we will update you as we build this up. We encourage you to follow your heart and choose a family you feel connected to.
For those who may still feel uncertain, we recommend supporting our online shop, where 100% of the proceeds are guaranteed to go directly to the families in need. This option ensures that your donation is securely routed to those who need it most—whether it’s for a vetted or informally-vetted campaign. Plus, by purchasing a Palestinian item designed by Gazans, you are not only supporting a family but also contributing to the resilience and creativity of the people of Gaza.
Your generosity means the world, and we're here to make sure your contributions make the biggest impact possible. If you ever have concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re always happy to help!
